Donnie Darko: Thursday, May 11, 7 PM

People who have been in the department for a while might remember my occasional movie night notices, but it’s been a while now. But I thought I’d restart the tradition on a semi-regular basis.

The way it works is this: I pick a movie that I like a lot, but that might not be as well-known as I think it should be. I then pick an evening to show it in the LCI lounge. You, being a cool, movie-loving person with good taste, come. You maybe even bring snacks for yourself. Yum. Everybody spends a couple minutes helping set up the projector and furniture before the movie, and a couple minutes putting things away after, and we have ourselves a show. I may set aside some time to gush about the movie and convince you that the black-and-white all-little-person German film we are watching is indeed a masterpiece, despite your misgivings. This is not because you are lacking in taste, but because you are unrefined, and need to be set gently on the right track. Good times are had by all.

This week’s movie will be in the LCI lounge Thursday night at 7 PM, and it is… Donnie Darko, the director’s cut.

I know, I know, I’ve shown Donnie Darko before. More than once, even. But I really, really like this movie, and it makes me sad that there are so many people out there who haven’t seen it, and if you have seen it, you know it bears watching multiple times, and this is the director’s cut, anyway, which you might not have seen.

28 days… six hours… 42 minutes… 12 seconds. That… is when the world… will end.
