2014 in 6 Minutes, 13 Seconds

2014 was a pretty big year for me. Here’s a video I made about 2014.

Here are a couple of different versions if that doesn’t work: YouTube, Dropbox.

I shot and edited this video entirely on my iPhone using 1 Second Everyday, iMovie for iOS, Hyperlapse and Movie Looks HD. The song is They Won’t See Me, by The Field. Buy the album, it’s fantastic.

Previous annual posts and things I made: 2013, 2012, 2011.

My 2011

My 2011, originally uploaded by Mister Wind-Up Bird.

2011 was a pretty big year for me, and what better time for reflection than hung over and hunched over my laptop after a boozy New Year’s Eve at home?

Ascension to Doctorhood

research complete

Well, okay, I’m not Dr Brochu just yet. There’s a list of minor revisions and some paperwork ahead of me. But on Friday, November 26, 2010, I successfully defended my thesis and passed my doctoral exam, so the days of gut-churning anxiety are finally over.

It’s disturbing how similar this feeling is to what I felt when I finally beat Nethack. (And I thank former fellow Kommunist and Nethacker Eddy for the title of this post.)

Your Guide to Zombie (and related) Movie History

AKA “How Eric Spent His Halloween”.

Not clear about the connection between CaaguazĂș Return of the Living Dead Part II and http://ekoprevent.com/termekek/ragasztos-csapdak/trapper-kartevo-monitorcsapda/ Dawn of the Dead? And still wondering where http://heartsyncministries.org/.well-known/alfacgiapi Day of the Dead 2: Contagium fits into all this? Then you’re probably the very narrow target audience for this diagram I put together!

I have, to my shame and/or pride seen most of the movies listed here, plus a bunch of others I haven’t figured out how to put in yet, and I decided to use my zombie movie knowledge (with some help from wikipedia) to map out the most notable films, series and subgenres. Most of the influences are totally my own take on things, so let me know if you disagree. Let me know, too, what I’m missing and/or got wrong, and it’ll go into the inevitable “Your Guide to Zombie (and related) Movie History, v2.0”.

It started snowing last night in Vancouver, and hasn’t let up. Late last night, I went out and made a snowman to greet the winter with his ceremonial staff and candle lantern.
