Happy Easter!

Look, bunnies!

new look = no more downtime?

Okay, I think I figured out why my site was going down, and it had to do with the theme I was using. So I’ve switched to this very pleasant, minimal theme, Barthelme. I’m not sure yet if I’ll try to restore the old theme, personalize this one, or try out yet another one. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

reading list

reading list, originally uploaded by Mister Wind-Up Bird.

Currently reading or about to read.

  • Michael Ignatieff, can you order gabapentin online The Rights Revolution. I figure I should know more about Ignatieff, since it’s currently looking pretty likely he will be our Prime Minister before long.
  • Barack Obama, The Audacity of Hope. I meant to read this before the US election, but never got around to it.
  • Roberto Bolano, 2666. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about the novel, including comparisons to The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, my favourite novel.
  • John Hodgman. More Information Than You Require. Maybe not quite as laugh-out-loud funny as The Areas of my Expertise, but just as enjoyable.
  • Nixon at the Movies, Mark Feeney. I’m almost done this, a journalist’s look at Nixon through the movies he watched in the White House, and later movies about him. Much better than it’s gimmicky premise sounds.
  • Something Like an Autobiography, Akira Kurosawa. I’m fascinated by Kurosawa the filmmaker, less so by Kurosawa the man. I’m curious to see how this book changes my understanding of Kurosawa’s films.

when Herzog met Danzig

These t-shirts are possibly the only ones that can top my Nethack shirt in pure geeky awesomeness. I want the Herzog one just because he’s my favourite director and spiritual idol, but the Fassbinder-Metallica one is probably the coolest, and the Bergman-Maiden one is the funniest. The AV Club comments also have some pretty awesome suggestions that I would pay to have on T-shirts: The Doors-The Coens, Guns ‘n’ Roses-George Romero and Altman-Anthrax are all pretty bitchin’ ideas.

The lovely Janelle also uncovered this charmingly dorky attempt, which has to win some kind of irony award (especially since Herzog: not so strong with the whole irony thing to begin with).

The Guardian thinks my neighbourhood is cool

Quoth The Guardian:

When developers – especially those hawking new apartment buildings with names like Olive or Aubergine – started branding this once-gritty area as SoMa, some locals rolled their eyes. They hadn’t carved a bohemian niche in this mostly forgotten neighbourhood for it to be hijacked by yuppie-luring marketing campaigns. Luckily, South Main (as real locals refer to it) has mostly survived the spin, becoming Vancouver’s coolest hangout and an ideal destination for visitors aiming beyond the city’s crowded tourist attractions and its nature-hugging, camera-ready vistas.

Only… I’ve yet to hear anyone actually call the neighbourhood “South Main”.
